‘Will non-organic PM call her?’: Opposition attacks Modi govt after historic Vinesh Phogat victory | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress leaders praised Vinesh Phogat‘s historic achievement at the Olympics, noting that her victory was a powerful response to those who questioned her struggle and intentions.
Phogat’s journey has been a fairytale, culminating in a decisive triumph when she defeated three top wrestlers in a single day to become the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final of the Olympics on Tuesday.
The leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said in a message on X, “After she defeated three top wrestlers of the world in one day, the entire country is emotional, so is Vinesh.” He added, “Those who refused to acknowledge the struggles of Vinesh and her friends, and even raised questions about their intentions and skills, have now got their answer.”
He continued: “Today, the entire system of power that made her shed tears of blood lies in ruins before the brave daughter of India.” He stressed that champions prove their worth on the field.

Phogat’s victory has provoked reactions from the opposition, which criticised the government because he made her demands during her protests in January 2023.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh wondered whether the Prime Minister would congratulate Phogat and apologise for the mistreatment she faced at the hands of the Delhi Police during the women wrestlers’ protest.
Ramesh said, “Vinesh Phogat is assured of a silver or gold medal in Paris. Will the non-biological prime minister call her? To congratulate her of course, but more importantly, to apologise for the appalling manner in which the Delhi Police misbehaved with her during the women wrestlers’ protest?”

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also present at the celebration, eagerly awaiting Phogat’s medal and offering her unwavering support. “She reached the final by winning three important matches in one day. My sister, we are all eagerly waiting for the medal. Every move you make on the field makes all of us happy. The prayers of crores of Indians are with you. Jai Hind! Keep fighting! Keep moving forward!” she said.
Phogat along with wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik had protested for the removal and arrest of WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Singh on sexual harassment allegations.
Phogat’s remarkable performance in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling has secured her at least a silver medal, which is India’s best result in the Olympic Games in ParisHer path to fame was strewn with challenges, including standing up to the leader of the wrestling federation, enduring harsh conditions during a 40-day protest in New Delhi, dealing with police adversity and undergoing knee surgery.
