Wesley Fofana admits he considered summer signing from Marseille

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana admitted he had considered a surprise approach to Ligue 1 club Marseille this summer.

Fofana is now in his third season at Stamford Bridge after joining from Leicester City in 2022 for an initial fee of £70million.

However, the Frenchman has been plagued by injuries at the club and missed the entire last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Fofana considered shock offer from Marseille

Fofana is now fully fit again and after being given plenty of playing time in pre-season, he started all three of Chelsea’s Premier League games.

The 23-year-old has played alongside Levi Colwill this season and it looks like Enzo Maresca is currently the first choice for the duo.

However, Fofana shockingly revealed that he had already been approached by Marseille this summer and that he had considered it.

Fofana admitted that Marseille surprised him this summer.

“I got a phone call that really touched me,” he told Free Foot.

“I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about it. It was Mehdi Benatia, from Olympique Marseille, the sporting director, it definitely affected me.

“I think everyone knows why and I had an idea. But at the moment my goal is to succeed at Chelsea, to try to win games, to establish myself at my club.

“After that, Marseille, we’ll see. I still have a contract until 2029. After that, we’ll see. I’ve never hidden anything.

“It’s my city, it’s my club, I’m a Marseille supporter. If that’s the case, then in a few years I’ll be at Marseille and if that’s the case, then I could spend my whole career at Chelsea. So we’ll see.”

It has certainly not been a quiet international spell at Chelsea, following the spat between Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali and now Fofana has openly said he is considering leaving the club this summer.

The Blues will no doubt be grateful to be able to focus on the pitch again at half-time after all the off-field distractions.
