WA Sports Events Secures financing for more activity

  • More than $1 million goes to local, national and international sporting and recreational events
  • 35 local events will benefit from the 2024/25 Sports and Recreation Events funding
  • Community sporting and recreational events keep WA active and engaged

From a run in Chittering called Chitty Chitty Run Run to Scarborough’s Groundswell Festival, local sporting and recreational events have received more than $1 million in funding.

Thirty-five local events have received a boost totaling $1,193,119 in the 2024-25 round of the Sports and Recreation Events Funding Program.

Administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the program supports sporting and active recreation organizations in planning, securing and delivering sporting and mass participation events in Western Australia.

The recipients organize events with a varied mix of activities and sports, such as running, swimming, surfing, skating, wrestling, water polo, bowling, kiteboarding, badminton and cycling. The Australian Deaf Sports Federation also received funding to create a business case for hosting the Australian Deaf Games in WA and Pride Western Australia received funding to prepare a bid book for Perth’s application to host the Gay Games to organize.

The funding in this program can be used to help organizations develop a strategic event plan or event tender, but most applicants use the grants to support organizing a local, national or international highlight event, or an event with massive public participation. In regional Western Australia, the funding can support the delivery of high-level events at state, national or international level or for sporting initiatives outside of Perth.
