VETERANS, INCLUSION AND MORE – European Judo Union

The final phase of the opening day of the 7th Scientific and Professional Conference included several studies on veteran judo, refereeing, protection, inclusion and more.

Danilo Dos Santos dove into investigating an investigation into the Demographic characteristics of veteran world championship judo athletes: a descriptive study. The purpose of this study was to characterize the careers of athletes competing in the World Veterans Championships (WCV). A total of 3,453 participants (2,981 men and 472 women) were analyzed according to the number of competitions in the Judo World Tour, World Veterans Championships, Continental Veterans Championships and age at first competition. The conclusion of this descriptive study highlighted that most athletes had their first world-level competition experience in the veteran category. Otherwise, athletes competing in the WCV showed limited participation in major international events, including Grand Prix, Grand Slam, World Championships or Olympic Games. This pattern underscores the importance of promoting the WCV as a viable transition option for senior athletes after their careers, especially for older female athletes, who have had limited participation in veteran competitions. Nicole Maussier shared the findings of the study The integration of autistic children at school through judo and karate: a pilot study. It has been documented that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often marginalized and at increased risk for social isolation. This study involved 5 children with ASD (n=5 boys) between 6 and 10 years old who all participated with their classmates in an inclusive judo (n=3) and karate program (n=2) at school. Each program included two weekly sessions over a twelve-week period, with each session lasting one hour. This study analyzed 3 different areas in autistic children: the level of autism, social compromise and gross motor skills. The conclusion showed that the improvements observed in children with ASD had a significant impact on the social inclusion process, confirming the initial hypothesis of this study. The gradual willingness of classmates to interact with their peers and practice judo and karate together facilitated inclusion. The value of specialist training for coaches was also highlighted, which, with the support of psychologists with expertise in autism, enabled them to understand the needs of children with ASD and adapt motor activities in an inclusive setting.
