Trent Bridge Test Records and Statistics

Trent Bridge is one of the oldest cricket grounds in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, England.

The Trent Bridge was built in 1841 across the River Trent, opposite the city of Nottingham. The bridge was first opened by William Clarke, the husband of the proprietress of the Trent Bridge Inn.

It is home to the England national cricket team and Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

In June 1899, Trent Bridge hosted its first international cricket match, a Test match between arch-rivals England and Australia. The match later ended in a draw.

Since then, more than 60 test matches have been held.

Highest total

The English cricket team holds the record for the highest total at Trent Bridge in Test cricket. During the first Test of Australia’s tour of England in June 1938, the Wally Hammond-led hosts made a colossal total of 658/8d after choosing to bat first at Nottingham. Eddie Paynter hit 216 not out, along with contributions from Charlie Barnett (126), Denis Compton (102) and (100) to help England register a record Test total at the venue. Australia were later bowled out for 411 in their first innings as England enforced follow-on. Australia later managed to make 427/6d as the Trent Bridge Test ended in a dull draw.

Lowest total

The Australian cricket team recorded the lowest total at Trent Bridge in Test cricket. Batting, Australia were bowled out for 60 in 18.3 overs by arch-rivals England in the first innings of the fourth Test at Nottingham. Mitchell Johnson was Australia’s top scorer with 13, while captain Michael Clarke (10) was the only other batter to reach double figures. Pacer Stuart Broad was the wrecker-in-chief for England with 8/15. England later posted 391/9d in their first innings before bowling Australia out for 253 in the second innings to win the Test by an innings and 78 runs.

Most runs

Former England cricketer Mike Atherton has scored the most runs at this ground in the longest format of cricket. The right-handed opening batsman amassed 1,083 runs in 11 Test matches at an impressive average of 60.16. Mike Atherton also hit five centuries and three fifties at this venue in Test cricket. Fellow countryman Denis Compton is in second place with 955 runs in seven Test matches at an average of 95.50.

Most wickets

Legendary English fast bowler James Andersen took the most wickets at Trent Bridge in Test cricket. Between 2003 and 2022, the right-arm pacer took 73 wickets in 12 Test matches at an average of 19.23. He claimed two four-wicket hauls and seven fifers at the venue in Tests. James Anderson’s former team-mate Stuart Broad is second with 46 wickets in 11 Tests.

Highest individual score

England’s Dennis Compton recorded the highest individual score at Trent Bridge in Tests. Batting at number four, former England cricketer Denis Compton scored 278 against Pakistan in their first innings of the second Test in July 1954. His magnificent double century was peppered with 34 fours and a six to help England reach a massive total of 558/6d. Earlier, Pakistan had been bowled out for 157 after opting to bat first. Led by Abdul Kardar, Pakistan could manage only 272 in their second innings as they lost the Test by an innings and 129 runs.

Best bowling figures in an innings

Former England fast bowler Stuart Breed recorded the best bowling figures in an innings of a Test at this venue in 2015. The right-handed pacer recorded brilliant figures of 8/15 to help Australia bundle out for 60 in their first innings. Stuart Broad dismissed Chris Rogers, Steven Smith, Shaun Marsh, captain Michael Clarke, Adam Voges, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. England took advantage of Broad’s sensational spell to beat Australia by an innings and 78 runs as the hosts took a 3-1 lead in the five-match Test series.

Best bowling numbers in a match

England’s Alec Bedser holds the record for the best bowling figures in a Test match at Trent Bridge in Test cricket. The former right-arm pacer took 14 wickets during the first Test of Australia’s tour of England in June 1953. While Bedser took seven wickets for 55 runs in the first innings, he scalped another seven wickets for 44 runs in the second innings. Despite Alec Bedser’s incredible bowling performance, the Test ended in a draw.

Highest partnership

Former Australian Cricketers Geoff Swamp And Mark Taylor recorded the highest partnership on this ground in Test cricket. Geoff Marsh and Mark Taylor stitched a huge 329-run stand for the opening wicket in their first innings of the fifth Test against England in August 1989. Geoff Marsh hammered 138 while Mark Taylor hit 219. Australia won the Test by an innings and 180 runs.
