Transfer insider drops claim on Newcastle after decision on 2025 free agent

Leroy Sané’s plight will undoubtedly attract attention across Europe as his current contract with Bayern Munich slowly expires.

The Germany international’s current term expires in the summer of 2025, which is more than enough reason for several top England clubs to keep a close eye on him.

Whether a Premier League club can actually afford the salary the 28-year-old player is demanding is, of course, another matter entirely.

Can Arsenal and Newcastle United afford Sané?

Christian Falk reports that there have been no direct moves from Arsenal or Newcastle this summer for the ‘world class’ player (as talent scout Jacek Kulig described it on X for performances at Manchester City).

More importantly, while the Magpies were reportedly genuinely interested in the Essen-born star, his salary demands proved too high to secure a deal.

“There were reports in England that there was interest in Leroy Sane from Newcastle and Arsenal. I spoke to the club’s management and apparently no one asked about the player directly,” said the head of football at BILD Group The daily briefing.

“Bayern Munich wants to clarify his situation, as he will be a free agent in the summer. He currently earns a lot of money at the club (€15m plus €5m in add-ons). It is very easy for him to activate his add-ons, as he gets €1m after every six games played.

“If you look at Arsenal’s situation, they have Raheem Sterling now, and I’ve heard they’re not paying his full salary. Their deal with Chelsea sees Arsenal pay £100,000 a week, with the remaining £200,000 a week being covered by Chelsea. So he’s earning €18.6 million (£15.6 million) a year, which Arsenal didn’t want to pay! If you can’t pay that for Sterling, I think it’s very difficult to pay €20 million for Leroy Sane.

“I heard Newcastle were also interested, but it was the same match with Michael Olise. Bayern Munich were in talks with Newcastle with the former, and ended up paying a salary of €13 million for Olise (it could be €13 million plus €3 million in extras). Both amounts would be too high for Newcastle. If you can’t get that amount for Olise, it will be difficult to pay more for Sane.”

Who else does Leroy Sané want to sign?

BILD (via FourFourTwo) previously reported on Liverpool’s interest in the former Manchester City striker.

It seems somewhat unlikely that the Reds would go down this particular route now, following their arrival of Federico Chiesa from Juventus in the summer transfer window.

At 26, the Italian international is a great asset to Arne Slot’s team and he covers Mo Salah on the right flank.

It would therefore be reasonable to assume that an additional player would be added to that position in the form of a younger talent who could be trained at Anfield.

With that in mind, it looks set to be Liverpool staying out of the fight for Sane’s signature.
