Top 10 Best Modern Table Games You Need to Play – Destructoid

When people think of board games, their minds may wander to Monopoly, Riskor a child’s game, such as Snakes and laddersHowever, there are many more exciting games waiting to be played, all with modern and interesting mechanics.

It was hard for me to put this list together, because there are literally thousands and thousands of modern board games that I love. So this list contains the top ten basic elements of modern board gaming that I also tried to diversify to cater to different tastes, since this list will likely be read by people who are just starting out in modern board gaming.

Root has quickly become a board game staple on any collector’s shelf. It presents a four-way asymmetric experience where everyone is competing to win in the same spaces, yet playing four separate games. And the many expansions only expand this repertoire of roles and factions.

Although the teaching of Root can be tricky, if everyone knows what they are doing you will find yourself in a dynamic game where you are fighting, building, harvesting, scavenging and exploring ruins for loot. Each role has different things they can do and a different economy meaning you will need to keep your enemies close to know how to outsmart them.

Root is a staple of modern gaming and is a fantastic example of what it can be. It’s a great game that you’ll want to play over and over again.

oath best legacy board game

Vow is definitely one of my favorite games, period. A legacy game where no two games will ever be the same. ever be the same, Vow allows players to shape the history and future of the games through their decisions.

With one player acting as Chancellor, and other players acting as Citizens of Exiles, each player will have many different options on their path to victory. Whether the Chancellor enforces the rules or is overpowered by another player will not only determine the winner of that game, but will also impact the game itself.

A war game where each player fights for supremacy, the map itself will change, cards will come in and out of play, and buildings will rise and fall, forever changing the stage for all future games. Will you build a dynasty for your role, or will you be responsible for the collapse of a dominant regime?

fearless stalingrad board game

The Fearless franchise is an innovative series of games that began with Fearless: Normandywhich introduced the incredible card and deck building feature that so many have come to adore and love, myself included. However, everything that is good about the Fearless franchise comes to a stunning climax in Fearless Stalingrad.

Fearless Stalingrad will take two players through a campaign of games that is unique every time, as whoever wins each battle will determine which battle you face next. Entire squads and game states are only unlocked after specific conditions, meaning you can play Fearless Stalingrad several times and have unique experiences every time.

The deckbuilding of this game and the incredible tensions and consequences it forces players to endure make this the best war game of all time, let alone one of the best modern board games. It might be wise to start with a smaller Fearless game, but Fearless Stalingrad is truly one of the best board games I have ever come across.

pandemic board game without dice

Pandemicwhether you’re tired of the absurd amount of spin-offs and expansions or not, is deeply rooted in the modern ethos of board games. Pandemic pioneered what is now called the “Pandemic System”, and many other games have been released using this system, with entirely new themes and visuals.

This Pandemic is the original, offering a cooperative game where all players work together to fight various diseases before they destroy life as we know it. It’s incredibly accessible, but the depth of strategy required is admirable. With so many ways to lose, you’ll need to work tirelessly with your team to secure victory.

There are numerous expansions for this board game and much more Pandemic games to choose from. The original is great, but there might be another flavor that appeals to you.

frosthaven board game

Frosthaven is an overwhelming box of secrets, and I mean that literally. Sequel to the hit Darknesshaven, Frosthaven takes everything from its predecessor and improves on it, refines it, and somehow adds more content to enjoy.

Frosthaven is a colossal game that will lead a dedicated group of players through dozens of scenarios, where their choices and actions will divide them into different storylines, blocking scenarios but unlocking others. Your story is yours to be told, and Frosthaven has enough room for an epic story.

It’s a terribly difficult game that requires you to work together with your allies as best as you can. In between the scenarios and battles, there are tons of other activities to keep busy with, such as shopping, outpost management, and much more. With entire boxes, characters, and envelopes kept secret until you unlock them, there’s always more to discover. Both in-game and in the box.

ticket to ride board game without dice

Ticket to drive is an example of a modern board game that has invaded the homes of many families who wouldn’t consider themselves “board gamers.” The simple yet strategic gameplay makes it a great low-stakes game to play over and over again.

In Ticket to driveYou build a hand of colored trains that you trade for small train miniatures to build railroads and earn points. Seizing and establishing certain railroads will put others on edge as you thwart their plans.

Now I don’t think so Ticket to drive revolutionary in itself, but it is a modern board game that is incredibly popular, And it has many different expansions and editions, making it appealing to almost anyone. it is a great entry into modern board gaming and i would highly recommend it.

carcassonne board game without dice

The Carcassonne franchise is one of the best tile-placement games out there. Granted, you’ll want all the expansions (and there are many) to keep the game fresh, interesting, and truly awesome, but the base game is not only a fantastic entry into modern board gaming, it’s also endlessly fun.

Carcassonne is a tile-placement board game where players randomly select a tile and must legally add it to the vast mosaic of other tiles. As Carcassonne expands, players vie for control of fields and cities to score points, but with limited meeples, choosing and expanding the right plots (or denying your opponents!) is a strategic balancing act that never disappoints.

Despite there being many expansions available, this was my first of many games Carcassonne were played with only the core box, and each game was fun, interesting and different.

Catan board game

Catan is technically speaking still considered a modern game, so I would be remiss not to include it on this list. It is also another example of a fantastic modern board game that has already found its way into the homes of many and has far too many expansions and editions to keep it exciting and “modern”.

You and your friends will settle, expand, and secure resources to earn victory points. With a limited playing area, players will have to be very calculated in deciding what to build, what to build, and where to try to dominate the trading market, something that is entirely at the discretion of the players.

Catan may be going on now, but it is a modern base game and has many expansions to breathe new life into it. If you haven’t already, I recommend picking up Catan for a game that will appeal to many others who may want to play some board games.

the king's dilemma legacy board game
Image: Horrible Guild

The King’s Dilemma is always an interesting recommendation, because it is a role-playing game, something that people who are into modern board games may not know about. A diplomatic discussion game with a medieval lick of paint, The King’s Dilemma may not work for every group, but it’s a really fun game.

In The King’s DilemmaEach player will take on the role of a house representing different ideas and ideologies. As dilemmas arise and are unlocked, players will discuss and vote on what they want to happen, which will have consequences that affect everyone.

You need a dedicated group to play this game, as it takes multiple sessions to complete the game and have a winner. But the real joy is in the journey, as broken promises and fruitful alliances are forged through genuine respect or mutual benefit.

bloodborne the board game
Image: CMON

Bloodborne The Board Game may be a controversial choice for one of the best modern board games, but hear me out. Of all the great video games that have become board games — those that feature an excessive amount of plastic minis and parts and a million expansions to sell even more of said plastic — this is one of the best.

A cooperative game, Bloodborne The Board Game is a fantastic modern board game, as the core set alone contains four campaigns, each consisting of three play sessions. This is already a huge amount of content that is also very replayable.

You fight through unique campaigns and battle various enemies and bosses, a challenge that you must overcome together with your team. Of all the cooperative games I’ve played with my friends, no other game has given me this much excitement, and I haven’t even played the video game yet.

I just think everyone should experience the thrill of moving a ridiculous amount of awesome looking figurines while engaging in high stakes battles. These types of games have become very popular in recent years and Bloodborne The Board Game is definitely worth a try.

Now that you have a nice list of different modern board games to choose from, all that’s left to do is decide which one you want to play.
