Tommy Fleetwood consulted with his wife Clare regarding the LIV Golf offer

Tommy Fleetwood was one of the stars of this year’s Olympics, winning a silver medal in a fiercely competitive field. Only Scottie Scheffler, who is an enigma this season, performed better.

During an appearance on the Performance People podcast, Fleetwood discussed various topics, with a particular focus on his performance in Paris. An interesting topic of discussion was LIV Golf and Fleetwood’s connection to the controversial tour that has attracted a large number of golfers.

Despite the offer he received, Fleetwood decided to remain with the PGA Tour. The Briton mentioned that he has never been a golfer driven just by money but stressed that there is another side that clearly seeks greater financial gain. Many individuals have chosen to leave the PGA Tour and join LIV Golf.

“Most people – most sportsmen really, don’t actually do it for the money,” Fleetwood said, as reported by Golf Magic.

“I never really played for the money. I can look at what I’ve earned at any given time on any week.

But really it’s much more about myself, satisfaction and how I perform, can I win the tournaments?

(Money) didn’t come into the equation for me but definitely for some people, and you can see how appealing it is. For sure, there’s a lot to be said.”

At 33, Tommy Fleetwood likely received a notable offer from LIV Golf and could have joined the Saudi-backed tour long ago. However, Fleetwood chose a different path, valuing loyalty and the pursuit of trophies. While LIV Golf would have provided financial security even if his performance faltered, Fleetwood was not interested in taking that route. Family plays a crucial role in his decision-making process, especially when he is unsure of his choices. His wife Clare is a significant source of advice, and Fleetwood often relies on her input. This time, Clare gave him specific guidance, which Fleetwood decided to follow.

“Play poorly and I’ll get paid, that would be great. But I also think that’s where for me, I would turn to Clare – and we did at the time, that’s the kind of thing you talk about, because it’s not just you that’s involved in it.

It’s my passion obviously, but you have a family as well and there’s a lot more decisions that go into it.

But ultimately, Clare always says to me, ‘It’s what makes you happy and it’s what you feel is best for you’.”- Fleetwood said.

Fleetwood explained that his wife reminded him that joining LIV Golf wouldn’t greatly change their lives. He emphasized that his primary focus has always been to play at his best and maximize his potential as a golfer and athlete. For him, the decision to stay with the PGA Tour or move elsewhere is based on personal goals and performance, rather than financial considerations.

Being part of the PGA Tour also involves significant financial rewards and earnings from tournaments. Although the PGA Tour currently cannot match LIV Golf in terms of financial incentives, the prestige and tradition associated with the PGA Tour are reasons why many stars have chosen to remain. Many of them do not regret their decision, especially considering that LIV golfers do not earn ranking points and face more challenges in qualifying for major tournaments.

Scottie Scheffler

The winner of this year’s Olympics is American Scottie Scheffler, who managed to come from behind to secure the victory. Once again, his mental strength and skills were on full display, as they have been many times this season. While Scheffler has always been a talented player, many doubted he could reach this level of success. It seems that few can stop the American, and the question now is how long his dominance will last. Fleetwood is satisfied with the tournament and the leaderboard, acknowledging the presence of many well-known and skilled golfers at the Olympics. Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama earned the bronze medal, despite facing massive challenges from those who sought to disrupt his plans.

“Just look at that leaderboard – it’s amazing,” –Tommy Fleetwood said.

“It’s the leaderboard that you’d expect at the Olympics and probably what the sport deserves. I’m excited to be part of it.”

This year’s Olympics delivered what fans were hoping for, showing excellent play, amazing golfers, and a remarkable tournament. The excitement and high level of competition were evident, and there is hope that future Olympics will continue to bring the same exciting experience. It’s also important to commend the fans, who provided excellent support from day one with their enthusiastic cheering. Despite initial skepticism about fan engagement in Paris, it turned out that wave captured a significant number of people.
