The 2025 VW Golf R comes with a muscular appearance and more power

After a long teaser campaign with the usual spy photos, Volkswagen has unveiled the 2025 Golf R. The hot hatch and sporty estate debuted in their facelifted versions (Mk 8.5), with updated styling, a small power increase and extra technology.

Since the gearhead virus unites us all, we’ll start with the cool bits. Power comes from the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, which now produces 13PS (13PS/10PS). kW) more. The power is 328 PS (333 PS/245 kW) and delivers 420 Nm of torque.

A 7-speed DSG delivers everything to the car 4Movement four wheel drive. The model features torque vectoring for improved stability by distributing thrust individually to the rear wheels to optimize cornering ability. VW says 0-100km/h takes 4.6 seconds, and with the optional Performance Pack it tops out at 270km/h or 250km/h without.

In terms of appearance, the 2025 VW Golf R features fresh headlights, a backlit VW logo, a new bumper, fresh taillights, a gloss black diffuser and quad exhaust pipes. The sporty side skirts, matt chrome side mirror caps, 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels and other features contribute to its warm appearance. On the options list, customers can choose from the IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, 3D LED taillights, an Akrapovic exhaust system and even a Black Edition with a few blacked-out components.

The 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster has also been updated and includes additional features such as GPS lap time and G-meter on cars equipped with the Performance Pack. The HVAC The system has also been improved and users have access to ChatGPT and a new voice assistant.

Volkswagen says pre-sales of the latest version of the Golf R will start on July 3 in its home market of Germany, with the hot hatch starting from €53,795 (equivalent to $57,670) and the sporty station wagon bodystyle from €55,065 ($59,030). The Golf R Black Edition version will be even more expensive: €58,440 ($62,650). Pricing and specifications for the UK will be announced soon, and the 2025 VW Golf R will also make its way to the US, albeit only in hot hatch flavours.

We expect it to be slightly more expensive compared to the previous model, which has an MSRP of $45,665 and delivers 315 PS (319 PS/235 kW) and 400 Nm of torque, delivered to the Four wheel drive system via a 6sp manual or a 7sp automatic DSG. We will probably also get the new Black Edition variant.
