Tambaram Corporation: Tambaram Corporation handles infringement complaints in Chennai | Chennai News

Chennai: In a bid to prevent encroachments, Tambaram Corporation plans to survey the number of street vendors in the five zones and develop a plan to relocate some vendors. At a meeting with vendors and residents on Wednesday, Corporation Commissioner R. Alagumeena said that there has been a significant increase in the number of encroachments on the roads from Chennai to Kelambakkam. Pallavaram Radial Road, Pallavaram-Kundrathur Road and Tambaram-Mudichur Road lead to severe traffic congestion. “We will work with the police and take strict action to remove it,” she added. The company is also planning alternative parking for shoppers on GST Road and measures to prevent shops from crossing permitted limits. “Adequate space will be provided for pedestrians.” Residents say there has been a significant increase in illegal vendors and encroachments at East Tambaram, Thiruneermalai, Pammal and Chromepet along GST Road have severely affected mobility, commuting and safety. The 2022 incident, when a bus collided with a girl who was cycling home on Rajendra Prasad Road in Chromepet, still haunts residents. “My daughter used to cycle to school, but after that terrible accident, we are too scared to allow her to do so,” says Rajesh Kumar. “The sidewalks are so busy and there is no safe place for cyclists.” Others suggested allowing vendors to set up stalls in abandoned parks or other designated areas in the same place. “This would allow us to shop conveniently while keeping the roads clear for pedestrians and vehicles,” said Janaki Raman of Thiruneermalai. Vendors who attended the meeting said they would like more time to find an alternative location after being notified they had to leave. “We don’t actually know which place is allowed. So we keep moving from one place to another,” said Raju, a fruit seller near the company office. The commissioner asked vendors to remove their shops from the sidewalks within the corporate limits. “We want to ensure that our streets are safe and accessible for everyone. Vendors need to cooperate,” she said.
