Tadej Pogacar “completely ready for this Tour de France” – Right hand Tim Wellens

Tim Wellens has proven to be a very effective teammate for Tadej Pogacar in the spring classics and while the team has other weapons for the high mountains, the Belgian is looking to be a key rider for the flat and hilly days, and he assured that the Slovenian is in excellent form coming into the race.

“I’m not going to tell you everything, but Tadej Pogacar is doing very well. He was a bit sick at Isola 2000, but he showed impressive values during training afterwards and I think he is very, very ready for this Tour de France,” Wellens told Cyclism’Actu. This despite Pogacar’s recent Covid-19 infection, which the Giro d’Italia winner dismissed in the run-up to the Grand Boucle.

The Belgian, recently crowned national time trial champion, has had a strong spring adding results to his own list of achievements, but over the next three weeks he will be responsible for supporting several leaders in UAE Team Emirates, including Adam Yates, João Almeida and Juan Ayuso. However, the team agrees that Pogacar is their best option and a hierarchy is slowly emerging.

The 33-year-old is a very experienced figure and could also be crucial for days like the gravel stage and hills that will arise during the first two weeks of the race. As a lover of rain and bad weather, he admits that he will already face difficulties on the first day of the race that starts in Florence – where the team presentation took place last afternoon – and more than 200 kilometers later in the city of Rimini.

“The first few days will be tough, especially Saturday, because it will be a very hot day. We went to do the reconnaissance, and this stage with a 3,800 meter difference in altitude is already going to hurt the legs.”
