Stephen A. Smith replacement called out for ‘ridiculous’ Kansas City Chiefs comments made live on First Take

CHRIS “Mad Dog” Russo’s take on the Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for a third Super Bowl finish has not gone down well with fans.

On Thursday’s episode of First Take, Russo, Christine Williamson and Kimberley A. Martin returned to the ESPN studio, while regular hosts Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim continued to enjoy a well-deserved break.

The show came at a time when there was a lot of NFL activity going on as teams began reporting for training camp.

One of them was the Kansas City Chiefs. The rookies reported on Tuesday and the veterans had to report by Saturday.

One of the main topics on Thursday’s show was Kansas City’s battle to become the first city to ever win the Super Bowl back-to-back.

Unfortunately for Chiefs fans, Russo doubts that head coach Andy Reid’s team can deliver a monumental performance this season.

Martin and Riddick couldn’t believe their ears. They were both stunned as Russo began to explain his position.

Russo cited Kansas City’s narrow wins in the final round of the playoffs against the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens and in the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers.

“They could have lost to Buffalo, they could have lost to Baltimore, and really they should have lost to San Francisco,” he suggested.

Russo added that he believes Kansas City’s luck will eventually run out if similar circumstances repeat themselves.

This view caused division on X, where viewers immediately criticized his comments.

“This is a ridiculous notion. I can imagine ‘what if’ at least 3 of (Tom) Brady’s SB wins,” one said.

“Not even a valid argument lmao,” a second commented.

“This guy named 6-7 situations where things could have been done differently. It’s like that’s not what the whole game of football is about,” another replied.

While a fourth replied: “Lol I like ‘Well if all those other things had happened they would have lost!’”

“What a brutal argument. Great teams win such exciting games. That’s what separates great from good.”

By winning Super Bowl LVIII, the Chiefs became the first team to win back-to-back championships since the 2003-04 New England Patriots.

If they were to win LXI, they would become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, but they would not be the first team to win three consecutive NFL championships.

Before the first-ever championship game, the Green Bay Packers won the NFL standings between 1929 and 1931.

Green Bay went on to win three consecutive championship games from 1965 through 1967, including the first two Super Bowls.

As for reaching the Super Bowl for a third straight year, only the Miami Dolphins (1971-73), Bills (1990-93) and Patriots (2016-18) have accomplished this feat.
