Stage wins, dots, household chores? What to expect from the 4 Americans in the 2024 Tour de France

The 2024 Tour de France will start on Saturday, June 29 in Florence, Italy, with a peloton of 176 riders divided over 22 teams.

This year there are only four American riders among them, but based on their strong performances of late, this small contingent is promising. Here are the four American riders competing in this year’s Tour de France.

But last season, the 29-year-old Coloradan finally got a shot at his own glory at La Vuelta a España, and made it count. He earned the iconic red jersey after stage eight and, despite some questionable antics from the team, managed to keep it all the way to Madrid thirteen stages later. Kuss became the first American to win a Grand Tour in ten years and the second American ever to win the Vuelta. The helper became an overnight hero, proving that he is capable of leading a team if given the chance.

If Kuss is Vingegaard’s lieutenant, then Matteo Jorgenson might be his sergeant. The 24-year-old Idahoan is new to the Visma – Lease a Bike team this year, but he has already proven himself as a capable and versatile asset. He claimed the top step of the podium after an impressive solo ride at Dwars Door Vlaanderen and this spring became the third American ever to win a stage in the Paris-Nice race.

Despite his young age, Jorgenson makes his third appearance in the Tour de France. Expectations are high after his exciting performance last year, when he cleverly drove himself into several breakaways. And who can forget his performance in stage nine? He captured the hearts of American fans that day by attacking solo and racing up the Puy de Dôme, but was caught by the race leaders in the last 500 meters. Whether he’s serving his team leader or chasing a stage win, Jorgenson will be an exciting rider to watch at the Tour.

Matteo Jorgenson wasn’t the only American to climb the climbs during last year’s Tour. In his fourth Tour de France with the EF Education-EasyPost team, Neilson Powless rode himself in the dotted King of the Mountain jersey on stage two – the first American to wear the jersey since 2017 – and managed to hold on to it until the stage. He became number 15 and proved himself as one of the best climbers in the peloton.
