Spain at the European Championship: all-time results, wins, record at the UEFA European Championship

Spain are looking to revive memories of past glories as they challenge the continent’s best at Euro 2024 in Germany.

They certainly started positively, beating Croatia 3-0 in their opening match in Group B. They promptly secured qualification for the knockout stages after beating Italy 1-0 on matchday two with another strong performance.

La Roja exited the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the round of 16, with head coach Luis Enrique subsequently leaving his role.

The Spanish Football Federation moved quickly to promote Under-21 boss Luis de la Fuente as his replacement ahead of the start of Euro 2024 qualifying.

De la Fuente is under less pressure than previous Spanish coaches as his side lack the established star names of previous years, but the two-time winners will still expect a strong performance.

They finished first in qualifying group A for Scotland, winning seven of their eight matches, their only outlier being a 2–0 defeat in Glasgow in March 2023. They failed to win any of their friendly matches in March 2024 against Colombia and Brazil, but Scoring ten goals in two European Championship warm-up matches against Andorra and Northern Ireland gave them a confidence boost ahead of their trip to Germany.

MORE: Who has qualified for Euro 2024?

How did Spain qualify for Euro 2024?

Spain found themselves locked in an unexpected battle with Scotland for top spot in Group A during qualifying. After losing the opening match in Glasgow, De la Fuente’s side had to bounce back in the second half of 2023.

Seven straight wins saw them trail Scotland, who finished second in the group, while Erling Haaland’s Norway missed out entirely.

How many times has Spain won the Euro?

Spain won two European Championships throughout their international history: in 2008And 2012.

Italy have also won two, Germany and France three each, but Spain has the proud reputation of being the only national team to defend a European title.

The double victory came either side of their first World Cup glory as La Roja lifted the 2010 FIFA trophy in South Africa thanks to Andres Iniesta’s extra-time winner over the Netherlands in the final.

Three major titles in a row cemented Spain’s position as one of the best national teams ever, putting them on the big stage alongside iconic Brazilian sides.

Fernando Torres’ goal sealed a final victory over Germany in 2008, but the 2012 final was a showpiece of Spain’s brilliance as Italy were defeated 4-0.
