Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland won’t be happy if Robert Whittaker skips the line and becomes the next title contender.

Sean Strickland, Robert Whittaker

UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis will face former titleholder Israel Adesanya in the UFC 305 main event next month. Strickland and Whittaker will wait in the wings for the winner of the upcoming title fight.

Strickland, just days after defeating Paulo Costa at UFC 302, insisted he has no intention of fighting another top middleweight in the meantime, publicly rejecting a matchup with Whittaker, who is neck-and-neck with him for the title fight.

After Whittaker defeated Ikram Aliskerov at UFC Saudi Arabia, some called for Whittaker to become the next title contender, replacing Strickland.

Sean Strickland doubles his title fight chances

In a recent tweet, Strickland laughed at the fact that Whittaker may be next in line for the middleweight title.

“The thought of Whittaker getting a title shot before me is fucking wild..” Strickland tweeted. “Bro you’re 0-3… By stoppage lol. I beat those two motherfuckers lol… Do rankings matter?! Do the right thing UFC..”

Strickland’s win over Costa was a nice comeback after losing a split decision to du Plessis at UFC 297. The fight was Strickland’s first middleweight title defense after pulling off a huge upset against Adesanya at UFC 293.

Whittaker, like Strickland, bounced back nicely after a stunning defeat in the Octagon, losing to du Plessis at UFC 290 before winning against Aliskerov.

Strickland has won four of his last five fights since losing back-to-back bouts to Alex Pereira and Jared Cannonier in 2022. Before his title shot against Adesanya, Strickland posted impressive wins over Nassourdine Imavov and Abus Magomedov.

Strickland and Whittaker are undoubtedly the top two contenders in the middleweight division, behind Adesanya and du Plessis. While they both wait for another potential title shot, Strickland doubles his wait.
