SASCOC announces further athletes selected for Team SA for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The South African Sports Federation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee gave Team South Africa’s representation for the Paris Olympic Games a significant boost when additional names and sporting codes were revealed at the second team announcement, in Johannesburg on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

In addition, SASCOC further unveiled financial incentives for medalists.

Announcing the list of athletes, Mr Barry Hendricks, President of the South African Sports Federation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC), said: “This is an important step in recognizing the remarkable achievements of our athletes.”

“This moment also marks another milestone for our organization as we continue our commitment to deliver a strong and competitive Team SA for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.”

The latest announcement features a wide range of athletes who will compete, including athletics, cycling, hockey, rowing, rugby sevens and triathlon, and the expanded list increases SA representation to a total of 15 sporting codes, in addition to the athletes announced on May 15 .

The women’s sevens rugby team is a preliminary squad, with the final squad to be announced before the end of June.

Ms Nozipho Jafta, the CEO of SASCOC, expressed her excitement over the team’s announcement. “SASCOC has been committed to supporting all sporting codes to achieve Olympic qualification.”

“Through the Bidvest OPEX program, which continues to support the athletes and teams, SASCOC has seen the fruits of its investment in the athletes, not only qualifying for Paris 2024, but also looking ahead to Los Angeles 2028.”

There are a number of athletes from the Equestrian, Golf, Judo, Rowing and Skateboarding sporting codes who have achieved qualification, and their possible inclusion in Team SA will be announced in due course.

In addition, certain athletes from the Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Breakdancing and Cycling codes still have the opportunity to qualify. A final selection of the selection will be made at a later date, before the final closing in late June 2024.

SASCOC also announced financial incentives for athletes and teams who will earn medals in Paris, with payment structures differing for relays and team sports (hockey and rugby), where athletes can win R100k for a gold medal, for doubles, where an athlete can win R200k for a gold medal, in addition to incentives announced last month where athletes who win a gold medal will receive R400,000.
