Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the franchise, Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently announced at San Diego Comic-Con.

New Delhi: The return of Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), albeit in a villainous guise, is set to cost Marvel Studios a fortune.

Downey, who kick-started the money-guzzling behemoth that became the MCU with his role as Iron Man, is returning to the franchise, Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently announced at San Diego Comic-Con.

The actor, who however wrapped up the Iron Man story with a perfect ending in Avengers: Endgame, will not reprise the character, but will play the villain Victor Von Doom, or Doctor Doom, in two upcoming Avengers movies.

The upcoming films, titled Avengers: Doomsday And Avengers: Secret Warswill be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are also returning to the franchise after Avengers: Infinity War And Avengers: Endgame.

Sources told US news outlet Variety that Marvel is spending $80 million, or over Rs 669 crore, on Anthony and Joe Russo to direct the two new films.

The studio will spend a “significantly higher” amount of money so Downey can bring the villain Doctor Doom to life in the two main films.

According to the outlet, the Russos’ deal does not include up-front compensation, but does include performance increases that kick in at the $750 million and $1 billion thresholds.

In a departure from the previous schedule, the brothers will also produce the two films through their AGBO banner. Marvel typically does not work with outside producers, preferring to keep the team in-house.

As for Downey Jr., whose star power just got a boost with a first Oscar trophy for Oppenheimerthe studio has agreed to a deal that includes perks such as private jet travel, special security and an entire “trailer camp.”

The two Avengers Filming for the films will begin in London in the second quarter of 2025.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released worldwide in May 2026 as part of the MCU’s Phase 6, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” in May 2027.
