Rahui convincingly defeated Foxton at Easton Park on Saturday to maintain their place at the top of the Ramsbotham Cup points table in Horowhenua-Kāpiti senior club rugby.

The Ōtaki club have won all ten matches this season and scored 520 points, while conceding only 139 points. They look on course to repeat their title success from last season as the play-offs approach. They didn’t lose a match last season either.

The match moved at a fast pace, with Foxton taking over for them and breaking into Rahui territory, scoring an early try to go 5–0 up.

Rahui counter-attacked and was awarded a penalty, which made the score 5-3. The match started to move back and forth around the park and Foxton scored another try to extend the lead to 12-3.

The visitors began to take control after 30 minutes and scored a converted try to close the score to 12-10. Foxton managed to make the score 15-10 via a penalty.

However, Rahui broke out of their half and scored a converted try to take the lead at half-time (17-15).

“When the ball carrier goes forward, you wait for him to be tackled and then he arrives,” Foxton coach Tom Zimmerman said.

“Tackle and knock them down early and support the ball carrier.

“Make them work all the time, and at the scrum set you have the momentum to push them off the ball. We have to pick up our urgency on the pitch and not become too complacent.”

Rahui coach Mark Tooman said: “We have to get back into the game and be more positive, and instead of playing against 17, play for a certain area and see if we can control the game.”

After the break the visitors continued to dominate and scored an irreversible try to extend the lead to 22-15. The hosts broke out of their half, but remained in control.

Rahui started to show their dominance and further extended their lead 29-15 by scoring another converted try. Although Foxton did their best, Rahui scored twice more to win 37-15.

The curtain raiser was won by Rahui B who defeated Foxton 44-7.
