Plainview GBB coach Alfaro named full AD

Plainview ISD will once again have one person responsible for coordinating the athletics department after it was announced that Girls Athletic Director Adrian Alfaro would take over as sole athletics director.

Alfaro, who has been with the district since 2020, was named co-athletic director by PISD in August 2022 along with former head football coach Johnathon Haddock. After Haddock announced his departure on June 10, PISD appointed Alfaro to full department responsibilities for the foreseeable future. future.

In addition, Alfaro will continue in his role as head girls basketball coach. Alfaro said he was “off to a good start” after taking on his new administrative duties, while also developing the team’s upcoming summer strength conditioning program.

“There’s a lot more responsibilities involved,” Alfaro said of becoming a full AD. “Some of it is where I sit behind a desk. Part of it is about making sure we stay within our budget range for each sport. One of the things we’re trying to do is make sure that we’re within the fundraising guidelines, that we’re doing our job within the UIL restrictions and policies.”

Alfaro said it will be a challenge to keep football program operations running smoothly and transitioning to realigned 5A-II District 2 play. He also emphasized the importance of carefully coordinating practice times during the ongoing renovations of the PHS athletic facilities.

“I think (PISD Superintendent HT Sanchez) and the board have done a great job upgrading our facilities, and we’re proud of that,” Alfaro said. “One of my things I want to do next year is make sure we keep our facilities well maintained and look good for other teams and coaches that are coming.”

A native of Lubbock, Alfaro was a three-year varsity letterman for Lubbock Cooper High School before attending Texas Tech and earning his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Sports Science. Alfaro later completed a master’s degree in Educational Leadership Administration at Lubbock Christian University before pursuing his coaching interests.

He spent a year as an assistant coach for the South Plains College Women’s Basketball team before spending four years as the head girls basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Christ the King in Lubbock. Later, Alfaro spent a year as an assistant coach at Lubbock High School before accepting the job as girls basketball head coach at Lockney High School.

There, Alfaro spent four years coaching girls basketball and coordinating girls athletics before accepting an offer to coach the Plainview High School Lady Bulldogs Basketball team.

While a lot has happened since the change, Alfaro said the summer months were a good time to get used to the new workload and get things moving for the school year. He also said he was looking forward to spending some quality time with his family before returning to his various roles.

“I haven’t had much time to breathe, but now I can take a few breaths and it’s a little slower for me,” Alfaro said. “And now that this break is right around the corner, it gives me a chance to just relax, hang out with my kids and get focused and rejuvenated for next season.”
