Kevin Durant made history again on Saturday night in Paris by helping Team USA to a fifth consecutive gold medal.

Durant and the United States defeated France, claiming a 98-87 victory in the gold medal game at the Bercy Arena in Paris. That officially earned Durant the fourth gold medal of his career, breaking a tie with Carmelo Anthony and making him the most decorated Team USA basketball player in history.

Durant won his first gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He did not play for the 2008 “Redeem Team,” which won the first of five consecutive gold medals after Team USA slipped at the 2004 Games in Athens. Durant then returned in 2016 in Brazil and in 2021 in Tokyo.

Durant is also Team USA’s all-time leading scorer at the Olympics. He surpassed Lisa Leslie for the all-time mark in the Americans’ quarterfinal victory over Brazil in Paris. Leslie finished her Olympic career with 488 career points and also won four gold medals.

Durant’s gold medal on Saturday broke a tie with Anthony for the most in the men’s game. Anthony has won three in his career, in 2008, 2012 and 2016. Team USA star LeBron James also won his third gold medal in the win over France. Both James and Anthony have four Olympic medals in total, though the bronze came in Greece in 2004.

Durant returned to the starting lineup on Saturday and finished with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists while making 5 of 12 field goals. He averaged 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists in Team USA’s six games in Paris while shooting 54 percent from field goals. He also surpassed 500 total Olympic points, making him just the eighth male basketball player in history to do so.

While Durant has nothing left to prove on the Olympic stage and will be 39 when the 2028 Games take place in Los Angeles, the Phoenix Suns star has not ruled out a potential fifth Olympic appearance before he retires.
