Paloheinä disc golf course completed

The 18-hole Paloheinä disc golf course will be completed by the end of July and players will be able to use the course in early August 2024, the City of Helsinki announced in a press release on Monday.

The first hole of the course will open later, as work is currently underway on an artificial snow facility for sledding in the area.

The training will be fully completed in the spring of 2025.

The paths and tees for holes 2-18 of the disc golf course will be completed by the end of July. This will be followed by the completion of new signage for the area, the protection of the trees in the area and the construction of fences in late August.

In addition to providing disc golf baskets to Paloheinänhuippu, the project also adds new benches and waste bins along the sidewalks.

“We warmly welcome all disc golfers to Paloheinä, even though the course is not yet fully finished. The course is really beautiful and offers players the opportunity to enjoy different terrains and landscapes while playing,” says Project Manager Minni Karjalainen from the City of Helsinki.

All holes of the disc golf course are located on an artificial hill instead of on valuable natural areas, many of which can be found around the sports park.

The course consists of both meadows and woodlands and the average width of the holes is 20 metres. The trees in the vicinity are protected.

The wooded parts of the trail are designed around the naturally formed corridors between the trees.

The existing meadows will continue to be managed as meadows, so that biodiversity is preserved.

Disc golf is prohibited in the pasture areas and the most worn parts of the course have been provided with paths covered with wood chips.

It is difficult to find suitable locations for full-fledged disc golf courses in Helsinki, as disc golf requires a lot of space. The reason why the new course was built in Paloheinänhuippu is because the area was already reserved for sports and recreation.

Paloheinänhuippu was already used for skiing, sledding and mountain biking before the new disc golf course was built.

The disc golf course is only open in the summer. In the winter, the disc golf baskets are removed so that the area can continue to be used for skiing and sledding.

On the artificial hill there are special areas for mountain biking. On the disc golf course, the sledding hill and the ski slopes, cycling is prohibited.
