Olympics football: Ugly scenes as France beats Argentina, takes Egypt to semi-finals

Fermin Lopez scored twice as Spain beat Japan 3-0 in Lyon to advance to the semi-finals.

The Barcelona midfielder, who was part of the Spanish squad that won Euro 2024, opened the scoring early in the match with a left-footed shot into the right corner and added his second right-footed shot from 20 yards after the break.

Mao Hosoya, who hit the post for Japan, thought he had equalised late in the first half but his attempt was ruled out for offside after a detailed review by the video referee.

Abel Ruiz’s late tap-in secured victory for the European side, who now face Morocco in Marseille on Monday (17:00 BST).

Morocco dominated from start to finish at the Parc des Princes as they defeated the United States 4-0 to reach the last four of the tournament for the first time.

Soufiane Rahimi kicked off and fired home his fifth goal of the tournament from the penalty spot just before the half-hour mark.

Ilias Akhomach doubled their lead with a close-range shot and captain Achraf Hakimi extended their lead with a left-footed shot after a fine run.

Substitute Mehdi Maouhoub rounded off the scoring with another penalty in injury time after VAR had flagged up a handball.

“I felt like I was playing at home in this stadium where I play for my club, but also because our fans were so loud and there were so many of them,” said Hakimi, who plays in France for Paris St-Germain.

“Fans have followed us throughout the tournament, I hope they can follow us all the way to the final. We want to make them proud.”
