Bangladesh went into the 2024 T20 World Cup with the aim of qualifying for the Super Eight stage. They did so. But ultimately they missed the chance to reach the last four.

However, the failure to reach the semi-finals is not considered a failure by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The chairman of the cricket department, Jalal Yunus, said they were satisfied that they had achieved their original target.

“We set ourselves the goal of qualifying for the Super Eight before the World Cup. We did that. If we divide it into two halves, first of all everyone is happy that we achieved our goal,” he told the media on Saturday.

“Then comes the overall performance. We couldn’t play well with the bat the whole tournament. We had regular collapses at the top of the order, which we couldn’t handle well with the bat.”

After the team returned to Bangladesh on Friday morning, vice-captain Taskin Ahmed had said that he had never seen such a long period of poor batting from the entire unit in his international career, words that Jalal reiterated the next day.

“We have never seen the batting order fail so consistently. Maybe someone failed, but someone else compensated. But both our top order and middle order failed. The top order is more to blame. The players accept it. We have to find our weaknesses and work on them,” Jalal said.
