New Chiefs coach in angry confrontation with journalist

Nasreddine Nabi is expected to arrive at Chiefs to take up his role as head coach in the coming days, having overseen one last game with FAR Rabat, with the Moroccan team ultimately losing the Throne Cup final on 1 July against Raja Casablanca.

After the game, Nabi took exception to some of the questioning, having stormed out of a press conference before coming back to confront a journalist.

During the angry exchange, he is reported to have said: “Don’t hold me responsible, I am a coach with advanced degrees in coaching and you can’t talk to me about changes in this way.”

It is now an open ‘secret’ that Nabi is poised to become the new coach at Kaizer Chiefs, with the highly-regarded manager soon set to arrive at Naturena.

The Tunisian coach has also been granted permission to assemble his own support staff, and some have already begun arriving for the club’s pre-season training.

“The club will soon announce the new coach and his technical team, which will be tasked with guiding the team back to winning ways as we approach our 55-year anniversary in the next season,” a statement read this past weekend.

“These changes, and other developments, will be communicated in due course on our various platforms – including the Club’s website and official social media apps – as and when they unfold, to keep our supporters abreast of the progression.

“Kaizer Chiefs players and technical staff returned to club headquarters in Naturena at the start of the week for testing, assessments and pre-season training. This is as the team prepares for the new season after finishing in the unacceptable position of 10th on the log in 2023/24, which concluded in May,” another part of the statement explained.

“As the management team, we are resolute in our determination to rectify the situation and ensure we turn things around in the new season. We have thoroughly reviewed the season and have begun making appropriate changes as we get underway with preparations for the new season.

“Members of management and the technical team will be working tirelessly over the next few weeks to ensure that the team hits the ground running when the 2024/25 season begins at the start of August.”

Portuguese mentor Fernando Da Cruz will join Nabi at Naturena as a member of his technical team. Ilyes Mzoughi, the goalkeeper coach from Mauritania, has also arrived to begin settling in at Naturena.

Nabi is expected to officially take up his post at Chiefs during the first half of July.
