Bradley Carnell was fired as coach of St. Louis City on Monday after the second-year MLS club struggled to three wins through its first 20 games of the season.

The 47-year-old former international defender was replaced on an interim basis by technical director John Hackworth.

City are 12th in the Western Conference with 19 points. That is nine points less than a place in the play-offs.

Carnell led City to the Western Conference regular-season title last year with 17 wins, 3 draws and 12 defeats in the club’s first season. But St. Louis was swept by Kansas City in the first round of the playoffs.

“Given Bradley’s many contributions to the club, this was not an easy decision,” City sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel said.

“Unfortunately, based on our results so far in year two, we believe that a change of manager is in the best interests of the club as we regroup and look to improve both our performance and results.”

Hackworth had a 20-23 record with 14 draftees with the Philadelphia Union from 2012 through 2014 and served in various coaching roles with the U.S. Youth National Teams.

His first match as City’s guide will come on Wednesday when league doormat San Jose visits St. Louis.
