Maylor hired as assistant coach for App State Wrestling

BOONE, NC — Max Maylor has been hired as assistant coach and head coach of App State Wrestling JohnMark Bentley announced on Monday.

“Max is a great addition to our staff,” Bentley said. “I love the energy and enthusiasm that Max brings with a fresh perspective coming from his college experiences. He will be a great partner for our upper middleweights.”

Maylor is just a few months removed from completing his Division I wrestling career at the NCAA Championships. He represented Wisconsin in the 174-pound class and won one match as the No. 17 seed in Kansas City, Mo., after qualifying for the NCAAs as the seventh seed at the Big Ten Championships.

Maylor was ranked No. 11 in the country at 174 pounds his final season. He also made three dual starts at 184 pounds.

Before finishing his career at Wisconsin as a graduate transfer, Maylor was a five-year member of Michigan’s program (2018-2023), playing in a starting role for the Wolverines at 174 in 2022-2023 and 2019-2020.

He won 58 matches as a wrestler in the Big Ten, going 44-22 in his last three seasons, including 19-9 in 2023-24.

“I am excited to get started at App State,” Maylor said. “It is a blessing to work with and learn from great coaches. I look forward to joining the program and contributing to its continued success!”

Maylor earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Michigan’s College of Literature, Science and the Arts and is currently completing his master’s degree in sports management at Wisconsin.

Originally from Highland, Wisconsin, he was a three-time state champion in high school, winning a state title as a senior in 2018. He went 174-23 in his prep career.
