Earlier this month, Miles (12), who trains at the Hajime Judo Academy in Windsor Glen, won a gold medal at the South African National Schools Judo Championships held at the University of Bloemfontein in the 12-year-olds 55kg class.

In June, Hugo (10), who trains at Dorfman Karate in Parktown, won a gold medal at the KWF SA National Children and Youth Karate Championship in his kata division.

Miles attributes his success to regular training and a passion for the sport. “I started judo at my school when I was seven years old, and I go to night classes as often as I can,” he said.

Hugo also attributes his success to consistent practice. “Although I was sick before the tournament and injured my leg, my seven years of training at Dorfman Karate helped me to win a gold medal at the KWF SA Champs for the second year in a row.”

The boys both dream of visiting Japan, the birthplace of karate and judo, if they ever earn their black belts.
