Canadian coach Jesse Marsch said Argentina should be fined after starting the second half of the Copa America match late on Thursday.

The match was goalless at halftime and after halftime the Canadian players remained on the field for several minutes waiting for Argentina to emerge.

The world champions scored within four minutes of the restart to win 2-0, with American Marsch suggesting they used the time for some extra video analysis.

“When they were waiting, I knew they were watching video and analyzing how they wanted to play against us,” he said at the post-match press conference.

“Now again I wish the referees would make that happen. If we were five minutes late we would be fined. There would be a big problem. Let’s see what happens to Argentina,” said the former manager of Leeds United.

Marsch said he told his players to expect a change in Argentina’s approach after the break.

“In the end I made sure the players knew they were going to come up with a new plan and they actually switched a little bit more to three, but we still had to deal with it,” he said.

“Argentina should be fined. OK? A fine. Write that down. Olé. La Nacion,” he said, addressing his comments to the Argentine press.

Marsch was more positive about his own team’s performance after the world’s 48th-ranked team, which he took charge of last month, caused the world number one many headaches.

“The big picture is that, I thought, we put in a good performance and especially when we were able to execute our tactical plan, we made it very difficult for Argentina and we could have really scored some goals and taken the lead,” said he.

The match was only the third with Canada for Marsch, who led the team in a 4-0 friendly defeat to the Netherlands before a 0-0 draw against Didier Deschamps’ team in France.

“I told the team afterwards that we will take this game, but we will also take the three games,” he said.

“It has been unfair to them in some ways to be put in a situation where we expect to have early success with a new manager in a new situation, when we have to play against opponents of this level,” he added .

“But I think we learned a lot from it and especially that we can play. We can play with these teams,” Marsch added.

Canada will face Peru and Chile in their other Group A matches as they look to reach the quarter-finals.

“I think where we sit now, as painful as it is to know that we let this game get away from us when we had certain things under control, I really believe we will come out of the three games stronger, clearer and better prepared .” , hopefully more mature for what it needs,” Marsch said.

“But Peru will be another very tough match and we cannot assume anything and we have to keep pushing this group to develop, improve and get better,” he added.
