Manchester City 1 – 1 Manchester United

Manchester City 1 – 1 Manchester United

Manchester City won the Community Shield with a 7-6 penalty win over Manchester United after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

Manuel Akanji fired home the winning penalty after Jonny Evans had fired his shot over the bar, saving the champions from a second successive defeat at Wembley against the FA Cup winners.

Substitute Alejandro Garnacho appeared to prove decisive for United in regulation time when he collected a pass from Bruno Fernandes in the 82nd minute, cut inside from the right flank and scored an excellent goal beyond Ederson’s reach.

But City recovered and scored an equaliser in the penultimate minute of the 90th minute. Bernardo Silva, another substitute, got past Facundo Pellistri in the air and headed a fine pass past André Onana after Oscar Bobb’s cross from the right flank.

Team News

  • Man City manager Pep Guardiola gave Nico O’Reilly a competitive start in midfield, with Erling Haaland leading the line but Kevin de Bruyne sitting alone on the bench.
  • Erik ten Hag left new signing Josuha Zirkzee on the bench, but Mason Mount was allowed to start. Lisandro Martinez played left back.

Earlier in a tense match, James McAtee, who started in City’s midfield alongside 19-year-old Nico O’Reilly, had hit the post while Manchester United had come agonisingly close to a brilliant team goal when Amad Diallo slotted the ball just past the onrushing Fernandes.

Otherwise, it was United who had the better chances, with Marcus Rashford hitting the woodwork on one of the many chances and Pep Guardiola throwing his water bottle to the ground in frustration at his team’s performance at the end of the first half.

The City manager was able to smile at the end when Akanji was awarded the winning penalty after an earlier miss from Silva and, for United, a miss from Jadon Sancho, whose effort was superbly saved by Ederson and Evans.

However, United will be encouraged by the way they performed, having been given a boost shortly before kick-off by the news that a deal had been struck for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Analysis: City find a way to win

Sky Sports’ Nick Wright at Wembley:

Guardiola’s team have not performed well in the Community Shield in recent years, having lost the previous three editions to Leicester, Liverpool and Arsenal respectively.

It looked like they were heading for fourth defeat when Garnacho found the bottom corner to give United a deserved lead, but City showed they can dig deep.

Bernardo’s equaliser came from sheer desire. He overpowered Pellistri and finished Bobb’s cross convincingly. Another save was needed in the penalty shootout when the same player failed to convert City’s first penalty.

Sancho’s miss gave them another chance, and this time they took it. Debutant Savinho, goalkeeper Ederson, Matheus Nunes and finally Akanji gave City another trophy in their run-up to defending their Premier League title.

Keane: Ten Hag must be optimistic

Roy Keane on ITV: “If you were Erik ten Hag, you would be optimistic about the start of the season, given what has happened before.

“Ultimately they are just not strong enough and they will need a bit more strength to avoid conceding goals in the final stages like they did today.”

Analysis: Reasons for positivity for Man Utd

Sky Sports’ Nick Wright at Wembley:

Manchester United will regret not being able to hold on to their lead after Garnacho’s brilliantly taken opening goal, but overall this was a positive afternoon for Ten Hag and his players.

Just as in the FA Cup final on the same pitch 77 days earlier, they caused the champions serious problems, repeatedly overpowering them with intricate passing moves and relying heavily on their young stars.

Kobbie Mainoo, Diallo and Garnacho all caught the eye, with 20-year-old Toby Collyer also making an appearance from the bench. There were also strong performances from more experienced heads, with Fernandes excelling and Casemiro looking much better than he did last season in midfield.

There was no chance for the new Joshua Zirkzee, who was unused as a substitute this time around, but the former Bologna striker is expected to be followed by more reinforcements.
