The film received a standing ovation when it premiered at Cannes in May.

The North American rights to the film by Irish director Lorcan Finnegan The surfer – a psychological thriller starring Nicolas Cage – have been acquired by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions.

The film, set for release in 2025, tells the story of a man who returns to a picturesque childhood beach to surf with his son, only to find himself “humiliated by a group of powerful locals and drawn into a conflict that flares up in the sweltering summer heat, pushing him to his breaking point,” according to the official logline.

The film, shot and set in Australia, also stars Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak, Rahel Romahn, Finn Little and Charlotte Maggi.

“Lorcan’s film is a stunning visual experience with an incredible palette, paired with Nicolas Cage at his absolute best,” said Lauren Bixby, SVP, Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “We couldn’t be more proud to bring this film to theaters.”

The surfer was written by Dubliner Thomas Martin, who previously worked on, among others, Tin Sar, Ripper Street and Raw. Finnegan, a Dublin native, is now known for his directing work on films such as Nocebo, Without a Name And Vivarium.
