Lone Tree beats Highland in 1A baseball tourney opener

SIGOURNEY

For the first time in three years, Lone Tree’s baseball team is headed to the second round of the Iowa Class 1A baseball tournament.

And for the first time in five years, the Lions defeated rival Highland to get there.

Junior pitcher Jack Patterson struck out nine and pitched into the seventh inning as the Lions defeated the Huskies 9-3 in Saturday’s tournament opener in Sigourney. With the game tied at 2-2, Lone Tree scored seven consecutive runs over multiple innings to charge ahead.

The Lions’ reward? Tuesday night, they’ll face eighth-ranked Sigourney in a district semifinal at Sigourney.
