Day five: Broom continues good form; British trio advance in women’s singles

More victories for the British on day five at Ilkley as Charles Broom continued his impressive form on grass as rising stars Amarni sofas, Ella McDonald And Ranah Stoiber victories achieved.

Second place in the Rothesay Open Nottingham Broom picked up a quality first-round victory over former world number 39 Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6(2), 6-1.

The 26-year-old is having a brilliant season on the grass so far, breaking the Kazakh three times in the second set and booking a match against seventh seed Zachary Svajda.

However, Ryan Peniston suffered an opening round defeat to Lukas Klein 6-3, 6-4 as the Briton continued his return from long-term injury.

In other results, qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera eliminated top seed Hugo Gaston 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-3, while Benjamin Bonzi and Stefano Napolitano also advanced.

However, in one of the few second round matches today, Arthur Fery lost to second seed Lloyd Harris 6-4, 7-6(5) in an hour and 39 minutes.

Harris has been one of the top players of the grass season so far and has already won the Lexus Surbiton Trophy title. In the quarter-finals he will play against Richard Gasquet or Hugo Mayot.

Ladies draw: Banks, McDonald & Stoiber through to second round

21 years old Banks produced perhaps the result of the tournament, insofar as she defeated second seed and world number 111 Mai Hontama 6–1, 6–2 in just 57 minutes.

The young Briton broke at the first chance in both sets as she marched to her first victory on grass this season. In the second round she will face the French Jessika Ponchet.

That was quickly followed by qualifying McDonald she defeated seventh seed Arianne Hartono 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2 in more than two hours.

McDonald – who is supported by Lexus’ Pro Scholarship Program – will play world number 200 Lalana Tararudee in the next round. Tararudee defeated the 16-year-old Brit Mimi Xu 6-1, 6-4 in the first round.

This was only Xu’s first grass court match of the season. Earlier today it was confirmed that this year’s 18U Lexus Junior National Champion will have a wild card into qualifying for Wimbledon.

Stoiber produced an epic comeback victory against Slovakia’s Renata Jamrichova 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) and booked a second-round clash with world No. 144 Rebecca Marino.

The 19-year-old is a former Junior Australian Open semi-finalist and has also reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. She reached the second round in Ilkley in 2022.

Elsewhere in Ukraine Daria SnigurFrench stars Harmony Tan And Elsa JacquemotAnd Maya Joint all booked their places in the second round.
