Lehigh Valley softball advances in Carpenter Cup Classic with 2 wins

The team from Lehigh Valley won two of three games on Tuesday and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Softball Carpenter Cup Classic in Philadelphia.

The local team will play defending champion Tri Cape at FDR Park on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Lehigh Valley finished in second place in Bracket D and Tri Cape won Bracket B.

On Tuesday, Lehigh Valley posted wins over Philadelphia Catholic (10-1) and Delaware North (5-3) before falling to Delaware County (5-3).

Easton junior Audrey Rinda and Northwestern Lehigh sophomore Emma Freeman each allowed just one goal in the circle in Lehigh Valley’s 10-1 win over Philadelphia Catholic. The Red Rover held its opponents to one unearned run, as they struckout three batters and did not issue a walk in 3.2 innings pitched. The Tiger shutout Philadelphia Catholic in two innings pitched, while striking out one and recording four walks.

Parkland junior shortstop Allison Hunsberger went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs in the Lehigh Valley team’s first win. Liberty junior midfielder Addison Sabo added a pair of goals for the local side.

In the 5-3 win over Delaware North, Lehigh Valley answered two runs in the top of the first inning with one run in the bottom of the first inning, one in the second and three in the bottom of the third. Northwestern junior right fielder Rylee McGinley scored on a steal from home plate in the first inning and then tied the score in the second with an RBI walk.

Nazareth junior catcher Shauna McNamee gave the Lehigh Valley team a 3-2 lead in the third inning with an RBI single. Hunsberger extended the lead to two runs with her own RBI single in the frame.

Hunsberger had another two-hit game in the second win.

Palisades junior pitcher Karlye Teman picked up the win in the circle, allowing five hits and three runs in four innings pitched while recording three strikeouts and a walk. Liberty sophomore pitcher Addy Smith held Delaware North to two hits in three innings, striking out one and recording a walk.

In the team’s 5-3 loss to Delaware County, Hunsberger and Emmaus second baseman Abby Derr each had two hits. Teman hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning for Lehigh Valley.
