Jasprit Bumrah beats Rohit Sharma to win ICC Men’s Player of the Month for June

New Delhi (India), July 9: Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah on Tuesday won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for June, beating captain Rohit Sharma and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

“A hero for India in their successful T20 World Cup campaign has also won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award,” ICC said.

Following his stellar 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, which saw him win the Player of the Tournament award, Bumrah also won the Men’s Player of the Month award for June.

Bumrah beat compatriot Rohit Sharma and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz to the award in a month of thrilling cricket, culminating in India’s victory at the T20 World Cup in Barbados.

The 30-year-old was at his best in the US and the Caribbean, where he took 15 wickets at an average of 8.26, with an astonishing economy rate of 4.17. He joined Virat Kohli (a two-time winner in his own right) as India’s players to claim the Men’s T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament award.

After winning the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for June, Bumrah said it was a special honour for him.

“I am delighted to be named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for June. It is a special honour for me after a memorable few weeks in the US and West Indies. We have had much to celebrate as a team and I am delighted to add this personal accolade to the list,” Bumrah was quoted as saying by ICC.

“To perform as well as we did in the tournament and lift the trophy at the end is incredibly special and I will cherish those memories forever. I would like to congratulate my captains Rohit Sharma and Rahmanullah Gurbaz for their outstanding performances during the same period and I am humbled to have been chosen as the winner. Finally, I would like to thank my family, all my teammates and coaches, as well as the fans who voted for me. Their support drives me to perform at my best in national colours,” he added.

Bumrah began the T20 World Cup season in New York and was a reliable performer for India, starting his season with 3/6 against Ireland before settling the match with 3/14 against Pakistan four days later.

Although he failed to take any wickets against the USA in their third outing, Bumrah again showed his class in the Super Eights portion of the competition, taking a total of six wickets in three outings. From there, the right-arm pacer claimed 2/12 (2.4) in India’s semi-final win over England, before concluding with a 2/18 (4) performance against South Africa in the final in Barbados.
