Jannik Sinner defeats Alejandro Tabilo in rain-postponed Montreal event

MONTREAL — Top-seeded defending champion Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open on Saturday, defeating Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 6-3 in the rain-delayed tournament.

The Italian star was scheduled to face fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia on Saturday night. All playing time was washed away by rain on Friday as remnants of Tropical Storm Debby raged through.

Sinner missed the Olympics with tonsillitis after a quarterfinal loss to Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon. In January, Sinner defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open final for his first Grand Slam title.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori defeated Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-3, 6-4 to advance to a quarter-final against Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi on Saturday evening.

Sebastian Korda of the United States, the winner last week in Washington, advanced to the quarterfinals after sixth-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway withdrew due to illness. Earlier, Korda defeated ninth-seeded Taylor Fritz 6-4, 7-6 (4) in a match originally scheduled for Thursday night.
