Jamie Carragher has major concerns about one position at Liverpool

Liverpool have yet to sign a new player in the summer transfer window.

According to the latest reports, the Reds are interested in signing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

New manager Arne Slot has indicated that he is satisfied with his selection and that he has to take into account the quality he has at his disposal.

However, new reinforcements are needed for the team that finished third in the league last season and failed to win the Europa League despite many expecting it.

Liverpool’s interest in Zubimendi shows the club realises they need a new midfielder, despite Jurgen Klopp signing a number of new midfielders last summer.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has expressed his concerns about the Reds’ midfield, claiming he fears for the midfield position ahead of the new season.

Speaking on The Overlap, he named three Liverpool players who can’t run and the Reds’ lack of energy in midfield.

He said: “I find it interesting that if you look at Arne Slot’s game, it looks a bit more technical than Jurgen Klopp’s.

“He is a Dutch coach and if you consider what Jurgen did in that position, he brought in Fabinho. I am not sure if Arne Slot brings in that type of footballer.

“I think he wants someone who can take the ball and play it. I thought Mac Allister played that role a lot for Liverpool last season.

“Liverpool are definitely lacking legs and energy in midfield. If you think about how they finished last season, it was Mac Allister, Endo and Harvey Elliott as the midfield three.

“They all have great strengths, but none of them can run. When I look at that position I say it’s a fear, I don’t know if Liverpool will bring a few in, but if he’s a total footballer, will he be too much like Mac Allister from last season, and you missed that physical presence, that energy to protect the back four.”

Liverpool need a midfielder who can pass the ball

Carragher is right in his assessment and it is clear that a new player is needed in Liverpool’s midfield, someone who can control the game with his good passing.

Endo and Mac Allister filled that role last season, but the former is known more for his defensive qualities, while the latter is an attacking-minded player.

Zubimendi is the ideal player for the Merseyside club who can fulfil the role Carragher mentioned.

According to the Liverpool legend, Slot hopes to sign a player who is not like Fabinho, as the Dutch coach prefers someone who can pass better.
