Jamal Simmons gives Kamala Harris advice for Trump debate

The former communications director of Vice President Kamala Harris gave his former boss and her campaign colorful advice on preparing for debates.

Harris will face off against former president Donald Trump in the November general election. The vice president became the Democratic nominee after Biden ended his re-election bid in July following a terrible debate performance that raised further questions about his advanced age and mental acuity. Harris’s rise has galvanized the Democratic base and center-left voters, as the vice president is polling significantly better against Trump than Biden.

During Tuesday’s episode of The source on CNN, host Kaitlan Collins requested Jamal Simmons How much does Harris have to mention that Trump is a convicted felon charged in three other jurisdictions?

“Do you think she’ll bring that up often?” Collins asked Simmons, the former Harris aide.

“It depends on what their core argument is,” he replied. “They might decide that people know enough about that. Or they might decide that they only really want to address one. There’s only one as the proof point that they have to provide to make sure that the voters that they’re trying to target actually understand it.”

Simmons went on to say that Harris should not engage in a “policy point/counterpoint” because that won’t convince anyone of anything.

He added that his former boss must have a “core argument” for why she should become president before giving any final advice.

“And someone’s job also has to be to prepare for the debate – can you use the word ‘a-hole’ on national television?” he asked Collins.

“Your kids may not like it, but you can say so,” she replied.

“But somebody’s got to be the asshole here,” he continued. “Somebody’s got to sit there and really bully her and get her irritated and annoyed, because that’s probably what Trump’s going to do. And what you want her to do is work through that annoyance during the prep and not do it when she’s on stage.”
