India defeat Bangladesh with 50 runs in the ongoing ICC Men’s Super 8 match T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday (June 22) immediately Sri Lanka‘s world record of most wins in T20 World Cup history. India’s win over Bangladesh in the match played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, was the Men in Blue’s 33rd win in 49 matches played so far in the T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has won 33 of the 54 T20 World Cup matches.

In the list of teams with the most wins in the T20 World Cup, India and Sri Lanka are followed by Australia, Pakistan and South Africa (30 wins each). Australia will have the chance to move ahead of South Africa and Pakistan by beating Afghanistan in the Group 1 Super 8 match, to be played at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St. Vincent, on Sunday (June 23).

Most T20 World Cup wins

In the ongoing ninth edition of the shortest mega event, India has won all five matches played so far and is all but confirmed to secure a place in the semi-finals.

The victory over Bangladesh in Antigua on Saturday also helped Rohit Sharma become the second most successful captain in T20I history. The 37-year-old Indian went past Uganda’s Brian Masaba, who has 45 wins in 60 T20Is. Under Rohit’s captaincy, India have now recorded outright wins in 46 matches and one win after beating Afghanistan in the super over.

Most wins in T20s as captain

Pakistan’s Babar Azam holds the world record for winning the most matches in T20Is as captain. The 29-year-old Babar, who is likely to be sacked by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after Men in Green’s flop show at the 2024 T20 World Cup, has won 48 of the 85 T20Is played as captain so far.
