The Copa America and European Championship finals are over, but international football is not over yet: during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, both the men’s and women’s football matches will play a major role.

Men’s soccer has an age restriction to maintain the amateur nature of the competition. FIFA requires that Olympic teams consist primarily of players under the age of 23, although each team may have a maximum of three players over the age of 23. The rule is intended to provide a platform for young talent to gain international experience while ensuring that the competition remains highly competitive.

For that reason, you won’t see players like Lionel Messi, Vinicius Jr. or Kylian Mbappé. The age limit has made the men’s Olympic football tournament a showcase for rising stars rather than established professionals.

On the women’s side? Expect to see all the game’s top stars.

Here’s how and when you can catch all the action.

  • Rayan Cherki (France, Lyon): Cherki has been praised for his creativity and flair for Lyon. The 20-year-old has been described by scouts as “enchanting”.
  • Pau Cubarsi (Spain, Barcelona): There are few (if any) countries that develop their talent better than Spain, and at 17, Cubarsi looks set to be the country’s next great central defender.
  • Gaga Slonina (USA, Chelsea): The United States are coming off a poor showing at the Copa America, but Slonina could offer some hope for the future as the team’s goalkeeper. Slonina, who is 20, currently plays for Chelsea’s Under-21 side in the Premier League.

Women football

  • Aitana Bonmati (Spain, Barcelona): Bonmati is one of the most dangerous midfielders in the world and can be just as dangerous as a striker for Spain, the world’s No. 1 team.
  • Rose Lavelle (USA, NJ/NY Gotham): Lavelle has been injury-prone at times, but at her best the 29-year-old midfielder is a dangerous scorer for the Americans.
  • Alexandra Popp (Germany, Wolfsburg): Popp is the captain of the number 4 of the German national team and a striker for VfL Wolfsburg. Popp is a dangerous goalscorer and has been named German female footballer of the year several times.
  • Kadidiatou Diani (France, Lyon): Diani plays as a forward for Lyon and the French national team No. 2. Known for her speed, technical skills and goalscoring ability, Diani is a key player both nationally and internationally.
