How Jackson State women’s cross country fared in NCAA APR report

When the NCAA released its Division I Academic Progress Rate for institutions for the 2022-2023 academic year last month. It listed Jackson State’s women’s cross-country program as having a four-year rolling score far below the minimum passing score of 930.

A perfect score is 1000. Falling below 930 would make the program subject to being assessed penalties by the NCAA, including being declared ineligible for postseason competition.

According to the APR data released by the NCAA, Jackson State’s women’s cross country team had a score of 892. However, the school listed its score as being a 938. Here’s how both are correct.

While the NCAA gave the program a score of 892, it also granted an exception because of the roster size. When a team has a combined total of fewer than 30 scholarship athletes on its roster during a rolling four-year period, the NCAA includes in its a calculation called an “upper confidence boundary” that determines what the score would be if adjusted to reflect a roster with at least 30 scholarship athletes during the four years. Jackson State had a roster size of 27 for the four-year period evaluated in the 2022-23 report.

“That’s pretty much the language in the policy,” said Katy Yurk, associate director of academics and membership affairs at the NCAA. “The squad size adjustment or the squad size boundary is there to account for a very, very small squad. And cross country is typically a very small squad.”
