Great Lawn Kite Festival among the 5 things to do in Springfield

While temperatures are rising and on track to top 90 degrees this week, the weather can’t stop a good time.

Beat the summer heat with these five events around Springfield; Remember to listen to your body when you step out of the sun and cool down before jumping back into the action.

The Great Lawn Kite Festival

What: This national festival will turn all eyes to the sky. The Southwind Park Great Lawn Kite Festival, presented by the Springfield Park District as part of Hopeapalooza, brings together kite flyers of all levels, from beginner to professional. Fly kites into the sky and fill the Springfield sky with wavy red tapers, multi-colored diamonds and unique designs. This event includes bounce houses, a live DJ, a petting zoo and food vendors.

When: Saturday 10 a.m., with a rain date on Sunday in bad weather.

Where: Southwind Park, 4755 S. 2nd St., Springfield

Day of the Fae Magic Fair

What: A completely unique event will transform a popular downtown spot into a woodland wonderland for one night. Ad Astra is hosting their first Magic Market this Saturday for the elf folk of Springfield to trade coins for witchcraft items. It is encouraged to dress up in elf ears, wings and ethereal dresses for this magical market, where vendors will feed off the fantasy setting. Apothecary shops, rune and tarot readers, sellers of crystals and jewelry, decoration and more.

When: Saturday from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Where: Ad Astra Wine and Tapas Bar, 312 E. Adams St., Springfield

First SERA Springfield Rodeo

What: The Illinois State Fairgrounds, part of the Southeastern Rodeo Association, will host the first SERA Springfield Rodeo. Watch bucking bulls try to throw off their riders and cowboys perform masterful lasso skills.

When: The gates open Friday at 6 p.m

Where: Illinois State Fairgrounds Multipurpose Arena, 801 Sangamon Ave., Springfield

Paint socially at Buzz Bomb

What: Paint and drink – just don’t mix the pint with the paint water. All artists aged 21 and over are invited to the boozy baroque evening with Buzz Bomb to enjoy a drink or two while testing how steady those hands are while sketching the outline. The Paint Out Social, co-hosted by artist Sarah Dufner, will guide the paintbrush and ensure everyone goes home satisfied with their art.

When: 3:00 PM Sunday

Where: Buzz Bomb Brewery on East Adams

De-stress and stretch pop-up yoga

What: End your week with Ashley K and come together to share a peaceful yoga and relaxation class in a safe space for yoga enthusiasts of all levels. The class will focus on simple ways to stretch the body through meditation while calming the nerves.

When: Friday 7:00 PM

Where: 301 S. Grand Ave. West, Springfield

More: Tickets cost $18 per person for the hour-long meditation and can be purchased at the WholeSelf Healing Resilience Center, with limited classroom space.
