God Of War Ragnarök Gets Dragged Into Steam Reviews For PSN Login

In this story

God Of War Movie was one of the hit games of 2022 on PS5 and PS4and by all reports it looks and plays great on PC, where it arrived via Valve’s storefront earlier this week. Its Steam user review score isn’t great, however, with players using the metric to once again boycott Sony’s PSN login requirement.

God Of War Movie requires one, despite being an offline, single-player game. That means anyone hoping to play the beefy, brooding sequel to 2018’s GOTY will need to create a PlayStation account and log in before they can play, even if they don’t have a PS5 and never plan to. That hurdle is part of Sony’s larger effort to port the PlayStation experience to PC without resorting to its own game launcher.

And many Steam users still hate it. God Of War Movie currently sits at 65 percent on Steam with over 2,000 reviews to date, giving it a “mixed” rating in the dreaded yellow-orange font normally reserved for games with serious bugs or gameplay shortcomings. “I really wanted to give this game a thumbs up because it’s REALLY a good game, but the PSN requirement is ridiculous and Sony needs to know that gamers won’t tolerate this,” reads one review.

The game was supposed to launch, but the implementation was delayed due to all the other online issues and server crashes. When it finally came back online, it sparked a days-long review-bombing campaign which ultimately led to the PlayStation maker waiving the demand, but only for Helldivers 2.

When Ghost of Tsushima released on Steam in May and also had a login requirement, but only to use the online mode, Legends, and the PlayStation overlay feature. God Of War Movieon the other hand, it requires it to play the game at all. As a result, its Steam rating is currently almost 30 points below Ghost of Tsushima‘s, what the best selling game the month it was released.

God Of War MovieThe PSN login boycott may not have had as big an impact on PC sales, but the game hasn’t had as great a start on Steam as its predecessor. So far, it’s peaked at around 25,000 concurrent players on Steam, about half of what 2018’s God of war did on the day of launch.
