Geraint Thomas supports INEOS Grenadiers’ objectives for the Tour de France 2024: “Win some stages and of course perform in the classification”

At the age of 38, Geraint Thomas will start the Tour de France for the first time in his career, after completing the Giro d’Italia. It is a new challenge in the career of the veteran who has won this race in the past, but this time starts in a domestic role.

“I’m super excited to be here. I missed it last year because I was doing another program. I missed it. It’s the biggest cycling race in the world. To be here with these guys, who are doing the right way want to be aggressive Try to win some stages and perform in the general classification, it is of course exciting for me and what I dreamed of as a child,” Thomas said at a press conference before the race, in words collected by CyclingWeekly. “I think I will get the chance to ride a stage, but I think this can also benefit the guys riding in the classification.”

Thomas rode the Giro d’Italia, just like in 2023, and achieved the perfect preparation plan that brought him two podiums. This time, however, he started working soon after arriving in Rome, in order to be in strong shape for the Tour, where he will support riders like Carlos Rodríguez and Egan Bernal. “I have definitely done a good job. Whether I have done too much or not enough, I will only know when we get here. So far I have done everything to be in the best shape and help the guys.”

He himself could be a weapon for the INEOS Grenadiers if he reaches strong form in a mountainous race. “Potentially, I could be on the road and not necessarily have the legs for the stage, but then you’re on the road helping out in other ways, you know? I think the two can work well together,” he continues. “Let’s be honest, there are other teams that have more weight in the race than us, and bigger favorites. I think we can also race differently. It’s not like we’re just going to pull at the front. with one until there is one man left, because that’s just not going to happen.”

With UAE Team Emirates and Team Visma | Lease a Bike will take the leading role during this year’s race. INEOS can be behind the wheel as the two main teams battle and save their weapons, including Tom Pidcock and Laurens de Plus, who finished fifth in the Criterium du Dauphiné. An interesting team with a lot of quality, experience and Thomas who is eager to start his 13th Grand Boucle.

“I’ll just concentrate on the race and what we have to do, honestly. I think I’ll look back when it’s all over. In the back of my mind, yes, it could be my last, but I don’t think about that,” he concluded.
