Manchester City fans have taken to social media to express their disgust at the style of lettering on the club’s shirt in the Community Shield.

Pep Guardiola’s team went into the opening match at Wembley hoping to avenge their defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup final in May.

The Premier League champions had not won their last three games.

Both Manchester clubs wore their new home shirts at the national stadium, but it was City’s shirt that caused quite a stir among fans online.

A strikingly unconventional font on the back of the club’s shirt has caused widespread dissent, with one of the most furious fans calling it a ‘disgrace’.

One fan wrote: ‘The font on the back of the Man City shirt is an absolute disgrace. Heads should roll over this. Disgraceful.’

Another agreed: ‘Did City choose Papyrus as the font for the name on their shirt? Looks like the kitman forgot to put the names on and scrawled them on with a Sharpie in a panic’

A third added: ‘9 minutes into the new season and I’m starting to get annoyed by the font choice on the back of City’s shirts. I might need to restrain myself a bit more here.’

Another fan joked: ‘Can we add the font on the Man City shirt to the 115 charges?’

Another added: ‘Never thought we’d ever see this lads but here it is… Manchester City have found a worse font than Comic Sans.’

Fans unhappy with the font will be pleased to hear that it will not appear on the club’s shirts for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

All lettering on the highest competitive courts is standardized by the league. The latest new design is from the American company Avery Dennison and was introduced before the 2023-2024 season.

City eventually won on penalties at Wembley, with Manuel Akanji scoring the winning spot-kick.

Both teams had chances to take the lead in the first half, with City’s James McAtee going closest to taking the lead but his shot hit the crossbar.

Bruno Fernandes looked to have broken the deadlock in the second half by curling a superb shot past Ederson, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

After the break, it looked like United would score and Garnacho came into action at the right moment, cutting inside to put his team ahead.

United looked set to secure victory until Bernardo Silva headed in an Oscar Bobb cross in the final minute of normal time to send the match to penalties.
