Scotland struggled free from the shackles of injuries and self-destruction to collect a precious point against Switzerland to keep their Euro 2024 campaign alive.

Qualifying hero Scott McTominay’s deflected shot almost lifted the roof off the deafening Cologne Stadium after thirteen minutes.

However, a stunning blind back pass from Anthony Ralston presented Xherdan Shaqiri with an opportunity to curl a sublime first-time shot high past Angus Gunn.

Kieran Tierney pulled up with a hamstring in his hand as Dan Ndoye ran on and squandered a golden opportunity as he got through on goal and will miss Sunday’s game against Hungary.

But the Scots, already patched up in defence, woke up heroically in the closing stages when Grant Hanley hit a post with a header from Andy Robertson’s free-kick.

The Swiss squandered a host of late chances, but not enough to deny Scotland a point to finish third in Group A. The win over the Hungarians was certainly enough to take them out of a group stage for the first time in their history.
