Dominican Republic aims for Olympic glory in Paris with a strong contingent

The Dominican Republic is looking to continue its Olympic medal streak and aim to equal or surpass its historic performance at Tokyo 2020, where it won five medals. The delegation, led by head of mission Miguel Camacho, is optimistic about its chances.

The Dominican Republic has set its sights on the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, hoping to continue its impressive run of medals, a tradition that has been going on since 2004. At Tokyo 2020, the country achieved a historic milestone by winning five medals. The country wants to match or exceed this achievement in Paris.

Mission Chief Miguel Camacho emphasized the country’s ambitions: “We aim for five medals and as many more as we can get. We don’t want to put a ceiling on what we can achieve, building on the momentum since we broke through with one medal in 2004 following Pedro Julio Nolasco’s bronze in boxing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.”

The Dominican Republic has qualified 49 athletes for Paris, including the women’s volleyball team, known as the ‘Queens of the Caribbean’, and the men’s soccer team. This is the country’s first participation in Olympic soccer. Qualifications in athletics, judo and swimming could increase this number.

Notable athletes include Marileidy Paulino, the world 400-meter champion, who won silver medals in the individual 400 meters and the mixed 4×400 meters relay in Tokyo. Paulino currently dominates the Diamond League, a title she secured last year, and is seen as a major medal contender for Paris.

“Everyone is preparing to compete against Marileidy Paulino, the world number one. With such potential, we expect great results,” Camacho noted. The delegation leader, who also heads the Dominican Taekwondo Federation, stressed that other sports, such as taekwondo, boxing and weightlifting, are also strong contenders for medals.

Timely resources and preparation

Camacho attributed the smooth preparations within the delegation to the timely allocation of funds from the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD). Unlike previous years, when the government had to release exceptional funds for the Olympic Games, these amounts are now included in the General State Budget, which allows athletes to receive the necessary support well in advance.

“This timely funding allowed our athletes to prepare for their qualifications, secure their spots and continue their training plans leading up to the Olympic Games,” Camacho explained.

Looking back on the Tokyo Olympics, Camacho proudly recalled that the Dominican Republic outperformed several ‘sports powers’ such as Mexico and Argentina in the medal tally. Before the five medals in Tokyo, the country had won just seven since its Olympic debut in 1964, also in Tokyo.

“Our athletes are well prepared. We have done everything we can to ensure they are ready, and now it is up to them to perform on the field,” Camacho added.

A rich Olympic legacy

The Dominican Republic’s journey to the Olympics has been one of gradual and steady progress, a testament to the country’s enduring commitment to sport. From Pedro Julio Nolasco’s groundbreaking bronze medal in 1984 to the country’s groundbreaking achievements in the new millennium, the country has steadily climbed the international sporting ranks. Each Olympic cycle brings a new sense of national pride and the hope of contributing to the country’s medal tally, a legacy that the country cherishes and seeks to further enrich.

The ‘Queens of the Caribbean’ are a symbol of excellence in women’s volleyball, consistently performing at a high level and qualifying for major international tournaments. Their inclusion in the Paris 2024 squad is a testament to their enduring talent and hard work. Likewise, the qualification of the men’s football team marks an important milestone, demonstrating the growing prowess of Dominican sports in various disciplines.

Looking ahead to Paris 2024

As the countdown to Paris 2024 continues, the Dominican Republic remains committed to sporting excellence. The nation is keen to build on its legacy, not just in terms of medals, but also by inspiring the next generation of athletes. The emphasis on comprehensive preparation and support for athletes underlines the country’s commitment to sporting excellence, a commitment that will certainly be reflected in the team’s performance in Paris.

The excitement for the Games is palpable, with athletes and fans eagerly awaiting a new chapter in the Dominican Republic’s Olympic story. Efforts to ensure athletes have the best possible training conditions and the country’s growing experience in international competitions bode well for their performance in Paris.
