Denmark v England – UEFA Euro 2024 Preview

Denmark v England – UEFA Euro 2024 Preview

European Championship 2024

Denmark will face England in Group C in the UEFA Euro 2024 on Thursday. The Rød-Hvide drew 1-1 in their first match, while the Three Lions recorded a 1-0 victory over Serbia. These teams last met at Wembley during Euro 2020, when England won 2-1 after extra time in the semi-finals.

Denmark form

Denmark reached the last four of the last European Championship, but crashed out in the group stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They have become a very difficult team to beat recently. They have lost only once in their last thirteen games: a 2-0 defeat against Northern Ireland in their last European Championship qualifier.

In the March friendlies they drew 0–0 against Switzerland and defeated the Faroe Islands 2–0. Their pre-Euro friendlies were against their Nordic neighbors. They defeated Sweden 2-1 and Norway 3-1. Denmark’s only tournament match was a 1-1 draw against Slovenia, as the country gave up a 1-0 lead.

Team news from Denmark

Judging from his late changes in the draw against Slovenia, coach Kasper Hjulmand was happy with his team. The team’s 3-4-1-2 formation relies on Christian Eriksen behind Man Utd teammate Rasmus Hojlund.

The only possible change is that Joakim Maehle comes in as a left wing-back. Victor Kristiansen is the man most likely to be benched.

Denmark motivation

The Danes would be in trouble if they lost this match. Even with a draw, the final group match against Serbia could be a must-win.

With three back players, Denmark tends to retain possession in deeper areas and keep a lot of men behind the ball.

England form

England topped their group in qualifying for the European Championships without losing a match (six wins, two draws). Their last match saw a 1-1 draw in North Macedonia. Three days later they lost 1–0 to Brazil at Wembley, before drawing 2–2 with Belgium.

A 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and a paltry 1-0 defeat to Iceland in the pre-tournament friendlies should be little indication of their chances of lifting this trophy. They won 1-0 against Serbia in their opener but struggled to involve Harry Kane, who had just two touches in the first half.

England team news

Gareth Southgate will stick to his 4-2-3-1 formation. Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to start in midfield again, with Kobbie Mainoo and Conor Gallagher preferred.

Luke Shaw is still a long way from starting matches, so Kieran Trippier will replace the left-back. Phil Foden will play on the left, while Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer will be on the left of the bench.

England motivation

England can reach the last 16 with a win and will not settle for a draw. Southgate’s side are far from attacking, despite their wealth in the forward line.

If they score first, expect the Three Lions to go into their shell and try to protect the 1-0 scoreline.
