Dallas Cowboys Named One of the NFL’s Biggest ‘Losers’ for the 2024 Offseason

On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys had one of their busiest days in free agency of the offseason. The Cowboys announced they had signed two defensive studs from the UFL. It’s no wonder the Cowboys were recently named one of the biggest losers for the 2024 offseason.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he was going “all in” to keep the Cowboys’ core group of players intact for the upcoming season. The team used all kinds of excuses, including an inflated market, as a reason for not spending money in free agency.

As previously discussed on GH, the Cowboys didn’t even bother keeping their core, citing money issues:

But core players like Tony Pollard and Tyron Smith left in free agency. Jones was asked about the loss of left tackle Smith to the New York Jets. According to Clarence Hill Jr. with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Jones said the Cowboys couldn’t afford to keep Smith on the team for the 2024 season.

Jones was concerned that Smith would be given too much incentive this season. The Cowboys plan to try offensive guard Tyler Smith at left tackle.

The Cowboys haven’t added to their core players

Jones could have freed up cap space to add or retain key players by extending the contracts of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons. At the time of this publication, all three players have yet to be signed to a contract extension.

Mike Jones with The Athletic wrote that Jones’ decisions this offseason have made the Cowboys one of the league’s “losers” before the 2024 season:

Jerry Jones handled the offseason sparingly. The Cowboys’ most notable signings were the return of Ezekiel Elliott and the addition of linebacker Eric Kendricks (both on bargain deals). Meanwhile, the Cowboys lost Tyron Smith, Tyler Biadasz, Tony Pollard and Dorance Armstrong and failed to draft a running back. It’s hard to see Dallas defending the NFC East after Philadelphia’s active offseason.

Cowboys fans better prepare for a long season. They should be talented enough to compete for a Wild Card spot, but they are far from a Super Bowl contender. Jones’ strategy to rebuild the team this year may not have been wrong, but his message to the fan base was.
