CAS decision on Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against Olympic final disqualification postponed until August 11: IOA

The CAS decision on Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against his disqualification from the Olympic final has been postponed until August 11, an IOA source said.

The 29-year-old was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight at the time of the weigh-in on Wednesday, with the long-awaited verdict on her appeal due to be announced earlier this evening.

“The Ad-hoc Division of CAS has extended the time till 18:00 hours on 11th August 2024, for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling & International Olympic Committee to take a decision,” the IOA said in a statement.

“The reasoned order will be issued at a later date,” it added.

In the top match, Vinesh was replaced by Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to her in the semi-final on Tuesday.

In her appeal, the Indian demanded that she be awarded a silver medal along with Lopez as she remained within the prescribed weight limit during her fights on Tuesday.

Vinesh was represented by eminent lawyers Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania.
