Canada is making quick work of Germany

CANADA wasted no time in downing another powerhouse in Germany, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21, to remain unscathed in the 2024 Volleyball Men’s Nations League (VNL) Manila match on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

For the second game in a row, Stephen Maar and Arthur Szwarc ran the show for the streaking Canadians with 15 points each. They strengthened their bid for a spot in the VNL quarter-finals at 6-4 and a fifth-place finish.

Jet lag and time difference were no problem for Canada on their third straight trip to Manila. But Maar showed how they thrive under ‘uncomfortable conditions’, such as early morning matches.

That was very evident today as it took just three quick sets for the Germans to crash out after their victory over reigning Olympic gold medalists France.

“It’s our favorite activity. If it’s uncomfortable to play early in the morning, this is our favorite,” Maar said.

“I think we did a good job today with serving and passing. Our team played pretty flawless volleyball. In the end, Germany put up a good fight and I think we handled it very well, so I’m happy for the team.”

On the other hand, the European team suffered a blow in the VNL play-offs with its sixth defeat in ten preliminary matches, dropping them to eleventh place – three spots away from a top eight finish to advance to the final in Poland.
